April Gould, M.A., M.P.H., Ph.D.

April Gould is a TAG Criminologist and Instructor. She earned a BA in public health policy from the University of California, Irvine, an MPH in health policy, law, and ethics from the University of Virginia, and an MA in Sociology at the University of California, Riverside, where she has completed a PhD program in Sociology with concentrations in Criminology and Medical Sociology. She has experience teaching professionals and undergraduates about risk assessment, deviance, and health behavior.

Dr. Gould’s work uses qualitative and quantitative methods to understand prevention, intervention, and the health consequences of violence, extremism, and terrorism. Much of her past research was conducted through a unique collaboration between the FBI and the University of Virginia's Institute of Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy. Her current research explores the role of social support in the lives of former white supremacists to understand their engagement with and desistance from various extremist groups.

Examples of Dr. Gould's publications in peer-reviewed academic journals include “Exploring the Sexual Motivation Behind Child Abduction and Murder,” “An Empirical Examination of the Application of the Moral-Situational Action Model to Women Involved in Extremist Violence,” “The Competency Attainment Outcomes of 1,913 Juveniles Found Incompetent to Stand Trial,” and “Operationalizing Theory: A Moral-Situational Action Model for Extremist Violence.”
